R&D Scientist for Cell Biology & Tissue Engineering


  • Culture 3D organ models in microfluidic chips
  • Tissue culture and maintenance of engineered cell lines
  • Leverage multiple assay platforms to measure cell sensitivity in response to compounds or target modulation
  • Perform molecular techniques including DNA/RNA isolation, cloning, PCR, RT-PCR, qRT-PCR, gene expression analysis, cell line engineering as needed
  • Identify and characterize appropriate cell models that are dependent on the target of interest
  • Document, compile and interpret experimental data; manage laboratory notebook, databases, and/or spreadsheets to present data in a meaningful manner
  • Reading the relevant publications/literature to stay updated in the field. 
  • Assisting in writing competitive proposals
  • Maintaining a clean and safe working environment
  • Communicating, brainstorming and collaborating with a diverse, close-knit team


Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in a biological science, bioengineering, or related discipline, with a strong understanding of cell biology, physiology, and tissue engineering. Several years of Postdoctoral experience is a plus
  • Track record of innovative research and development as demonstrated by publications, patents, or work experience
  • Demonstrated a broad theoretical and practical knowledge within the fields of biofabrication, tissue engineering, and cell biology
  • Hands-on experience with in vivo and in vitro tissue engineering, and characterization-- Experience in phenotypic analyses (IHC, Western Blot, ELISA, qRTPCR), 2D/3D cellular proliferation assays.
  • Experience in performing cell-based assays
  • Experience with brightfield and fluorescence microscopy
  • Experience with in vitro drug testing and bioanalytics
  • Hands-on experience in implement quantitative in vitro assays for evaluating tissue functionality, stability, and safety
  • Demonstrated familiarity with a variety of relevant cell biology methods, such as fluorescence microscopy, immunocytochemistry, live/fixed staining, cytotoxicity assays, flow cytometry, ELISA, etc.
  • Continual learner who works independently and possesses a can-do attitude
  • Ability to multi-task and shift priorities rapidly to meet tight deadlines
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas and information clearly, effectively, and frequently (verbal and written)
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Willingness to work outside the established field of expertise
  • Possessing a high level of motivation, initiative, and sense of urgency
  • Excited for continuous professional development

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with 3D culture, co-culture systems, predictive in vitro models, and/or integration with biomaterials is preferred
  • Experience with organoids in microfluidic systems is an advantage
  • Experience with conventional and advanced cell culture approaches with cell lines, primary cells, and iPSC cells. Experience with 3D cell-culture highly desirable
  • Broad scientific knowledge including pharmacology, toxicology, pathology, physiology and biochemistry is a plus
  • Expertise designing & delivering fit for purpose assays for understanding the mechanism of toxicity of agents including drugs, for biomarker development and application, and for de-risking drug candidates is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience working with small molecules to generate full dose response curves in drug discovery is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with cellular functional assays such as cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and siRNA/shRNA transfection is preferred
  • Experience in biotech or pharma environment is a plus
  • CRISPR and cloning experience is a plus


 ** The hired person will directly report the Director of Disruptive Technologies and Materials Design (DTMD). The person will work with the existing team to support and build on current efforts and will also participate in the building of new initiatives.
